  • Collective Best Score

While absolute results remain low overall, Antofagasta shows one of the six stronger results in Economic Development and Working Conditions. In Business Conduct, Lifecycle Management and Environmental Responsibility, the company’s results are above average.

In Economic Development, the company’s relatively stronger results are largely due to an established system for working in partnership with sub-national producing country governments on socio-economic development planning. Antofagasta also shows evidence of working in partnerships with in-country institutions to provide technical training and to work on R&D on socio-economic and environmental issues related to mining. In Working Conditions, the company shows one of the stronger results with its programmatic approach to supporting a more diverse and inclusive workforce.

Antofagasta shows evidence of improvement since the RMI Report 2020, including a new Human Rights Policy referencing the UN Guiding Principles, and increased evidence of tracking and reviewing its efforts to improve gender balance at Board and senior management levels.

On the other hand, Antofagasta’s results in Community Wellbeing are below the average achieved by the 40 companies. The company shows no evidence of tracking its performance on preventing and remedying its human rights impacts. And Antofagasta shows little evidence of tracking its performance on social issues such as its efforts to manage its impacts on women, youth, and children in affected communities. Furthermore, there is a lack of evidence of the company tracking the effectiveness of its performance in respecting the rights and aspirations of Indigenous Peoples or systematically assessing and addressing the risks associated with its use of hazardous materials.

In the mine-site assessment Antofagasta ranks 21st among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 7%. Moreover, none of the four Antofagasta mine sites assessed – including a joint venture with Barrick Gold Corp – show any relevant evidence on ten of the fifteen issues covered in the mine-site assessment: local procurement, air quality, water quality, safety of communities, community grievances, worker health and safety, women workers, workplace deaths and injuries, worker training, and living wage.
