  • Bumi Resources
  • RMI average
  • Collective Best Score

Absolute results remain low overall and Bumi Resources’ results mostly rely on its formal commitments, for example on preventing bribery and corruption, on respecting human rights, and on ensuring safe and healthy working conditions. The company’s results also rely in part on its systematic approach to assess and address the risks of child labour and forced labour in its operations and supply chains.

There is evidence of Bumi Resources’ continuous improvement efforts on human rights and business ethics, since the RMI Report 2020. The company recently provided evidence of implementation of a due diligence process for assessing the actual and potential human rights impacts of the company's operations. In the company-wide assessment, Bumi Resources has one of the stronger results on this issue and also on the issue of respecting the right of Indigenous Peoples to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC).

Overall however, Bumi Resources’ results are below the average in all thematic areas except Community Wellbeing. Bumi Resources’ overall results are limited by a lack of evidence of systematic action on a number of key issues, such as assessing and addressing adverse impacts on land use and access to land by affected communities.

Bumi Resources ranks 20th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 7% in the mine-site assessment. Moreover, none of the seven Bumi Resources mine sites assessed in the mine-site-level assessment show any relevant evidence for six of the fifteen issues covered: local employment, local procurement, tailings, community grievances, women workers, and training of workers.
