Summary of Results
- Newcrest
- RMI average
- Collective Best Score
While absolute results remain low overall, Newcrest shows one of the six stronger results in Lifecycle Management. This is due to evidence of a mine closure standard designed to ensure its operations manage post-closure transition for affected communities, and evidence of the company tracking and reviewing its performance on progressive rehabilitation.
Newcrest shows evidence of improvement since the RMI Report 2020, including for example a new Human Rights Policy aligned with the UN Guiding Principles, new systems to identify and assess potential risks of forced, compulsory, trafficked and child labour, and improved disclosures of payments to national governments disaggregated at the project level.
However, Newcrest’s overall results in the company-wide assessment are below the average in three of the six thematic areas, Business Conduct, Community Wellbeing, and Working Conditions. Newcrest’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence on a number of issues, including for example tracking the quality of its relationships with affected communities, ensuring its operations integrate human rights into their management of security personnel, and identifying and addressing how climate change can exacerbate the impacts of its operations on its workforce, affected communities, and the environment.
Newcrest ranks 15th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 10%, in the mine-site assessment. Moreover, none of the four mine sites show any relevant evidence on six of the fifteen issues covered: post-closure, safety of communities, safety of workers, women workers, workplace deaths and injuries, and living wage.
