Absolute results remain low overall and NMDC’s results are largely dependent on its commitments to prevent bribery and corruption and to ensure safe and healthy working conditions, as well as its disclosures, on for example its tax jurisdictions.

In the company-wide assessment, NMDC’s overall results are below the average in all six thematic areas, and the company’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence of action on some key issues, including human rights. While the company mentions its commitment to respecting human rights, it shows no evidence of conducting human rights due diligence or of assessing and addressing the risks of child labour or forced labour in its operations and supply chains. Likewise, there is no evidence of NMDC taking into account national socio-economic development plans, planning for the management of post-closure transition for workers and affected communities, assessing and addressing any adverse impacts on land use and land access by affected communities, or disclosing information on the location and safety of its tailings storage facilities.

NMDC ranks 27th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 5%. The results of the six NMDC mine sites in the assessment are strikingly weak. While almost all the mine sites provide at least limited evidence on air quality and water quality, none of the sites show any relevant evidence on any of the other thirteen issues covered in the mine-site assessment.
