  • RMI average
  • Collective Best Score

While absolute results remain low overall, Banpu shows one of the stronger results on two issues: (1) having a corporate system for conducting and disclosing regular assessments of its environmental impacts through an integrated approach that considers the linkages between socio-economic and environmental impacts; and (2) having a system designed to ensure its operations actively respect the rights of workers to organise, collective bargaining and freedom of association.

In Working Conditions, Banpu has recently strengthened its disclosures on the number of mining-related serious injuries and fatalities for both employees and contractors.

On the other hand, Banpu’s results are below the average in three thematic areas: Economic Development, Business Conduct, and Working Conditions and the company’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence on a number of issues. For example, the company shows little evidence of a commitment to respect the right of Indigenous Peoples to Free, Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC). The company also shows no evidence of systems in place to identify and address how climate change can exacerbate the impacts of its operations on its workforce, affected communities, and the environment.

Banpu ranks 25th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 6% in the mine-site assessment. The overall results of the seven Banpu mine sites assessed in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. None of the seven sites show any relevant evidence for seven of the fifteen issues assessed: local procurement, air quality, water quantity, tailings, safety of communities, women workers, and living wage.
