Company report
Summary of Results
- Sibanye-Stillwater
- RMI average
- Collective Best Score
Absolute results remain low overall and Sibanye-Stillwater’s results rely in part on its formal commitments (for example to prevent bribery and corruption and ensure safe and healthy working conditions), and disclosures, such as information on the location and safety of its tailings storage facilities and its Scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions.
The company shows evidence of improvement since the RMI Report 2020, including by reporting on its strategy on low-tax jurisdictions and by its Policy for Responsible Sourcing of Platinum-Palladium, which while it doesn’t apply to all the company’s minerals, provides a due diligence system for suppliers and contractors that takes into account human rights and labour issues.
In the company-wide assessment, Sibanye-Stillwater’s results are below the average in all six thematic areas. Sibanye-Stillwater’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence of action on a number of key issues, including human rights. While the company has made a commitment to respect human rights, it shows very little evidence of having conducted human rights due diligence and no evidence that it tracks and reports on its performance on managing human rights issues. On other matters, Sibanye-Stillwater shows no evidence of developing procurement opportunities at the national level or developing plans to manage post-closure transitions for workers and communities.
Sibanye-Stillwater ranks 33rd among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 3% in the mine-site assessment. The results of the six Sibanye-Stillwater mine sites assessed in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. None of these mine sites show any relevant evidence on twelve of the fifteen issues covered: local employment, local procurement, air quality, water quality, water quantity, safety of communities, community grievances, safety of workers, women workers, workplace deaths and injuries, living wage, and worker grievances.
