Absolute results remain low overall and Nordgold’s results are largely dependent on the formal commitments it has made, including on preventing bribery and corruption, on ensuring safe and healthy working conditions, and on not exploring or mining in World Heritage Sites.

Nordgold’s results are below the average in all thematic areas and the company’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence of commitments and action on many key issues. For example, there is no evidence of Nordgold considering national socio-economic development plans in its decision making, planning for the management of post-closure transition for workers and affected communities, or disclosing information on how climate change can exacerbate the environmental impacts of its operations.

Nordgold shows evidence of improvement since the RMI Report in 2020, including formally committing to respect human rights in compliance with the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and disclosing information on payments to national and regional governments.

Nordgold ranks 22nd among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 7% in the mine-site assessment. The results of the seven Nordgold mine sites in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. None of these mine sites show any relevant evidence on eight of the fifteen issues covered: local employment, air quality, water quality, safety of communities, safety of workers, women workers, living wage, and worker grievances.
