Company report
Summary of Results
- ArcelorMittal
- RMI average
- Collective Best Score
While absolute results remain low overall, ArcelorMittal shows one of the six stronger results in Business Conduct. ArcelorMittal’s results in Business Conduct (beyond its formal commitment to prevent all forms of bribery and corruption) stem from its company-wide system for identifying and assessing any human rights, labour and environmental risks associated with its suppliers and contractors, and its disclosure of the payments it makes to subnational and national governments, in accordance with Canada’s Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act.
Some of ArcelorMittal’s other better results include its systematic support for STEM education in its countries of operation, and its strong focus on supporting technical and managerial skills development of its local workforces.
On the other hand, ArcelorMittal’s results are below the average in four of the six thematic areas: Lifecycle Management, Community Wellbeing, Working Conditions and Environmental Responsibility. For example, the company’s overall results are held back by a lack of evidence of formal commitments on, for example, adopting a lifecycle approach or not exploring or mining in World Heritage Sites and respecting other protected areas. The company also shows a lack of evidence of systematic action on, for example, planning for the management of post-closure transition for affected communities and identifying and addressing how climate change can exacerbate the impacts of its operations on its workforce, affected communities, and the environment.
In the mine-site assessment, ArcelorMittal ranks 28th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 5%. The overall results of the seven ArcelorMittal mine sites assessed in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. None of these seven sites show any relevant evidence on eight of the fifteen issues, including local employment, local procurement, water quality, post-closure, safety of communities, safety and health of workers, women workers, and decent living wage.
