Absolute results remain low overall and China Shenhua’s results are largely dependent on its support for technical and management skills development for its local workforce, its commitment to ensure safe and healthy working conditions, and its transparency on its tax jurisdictions and beneficial ownership.

The company shows its relatively strongest results in the area of Economic Development. This includes considering national development priorities, aligning its skills development with national skills development agenda, and working with producing country institutions on research and development aimed at addressing priority socio-economic and environmental issues related to mining.

While it shows evidence of improvement in four of the six thematic areas, China Shenhua’s results in the company-wide assessment are below average for all thematic areas and the company’s overall results are restricted by limited evidence of commitments or actions on a number of key issues. For example, China Shenhua shows no evidence of operationalising its commitment on human rights or tracking its performance on managing human rights issues. The company shows no evidence of measures to prevent bribery or corruption or improve the effectiveness of its whistleblowing mechanism. China Shenhua also shows no evidence of efforts to ensure its operations plan for post-closure transitions for workers and communities, or track its performance on addressing potential risks related to its tailings storage facilities.

China Shenhua ranks 39th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 1% in the mine-site assessment. The results of the seven China Shenhua mine sites in the assessment are strikingly weak. With the exception of some evidence from five mine sites on rehabilitation and post-closure, none of the seven mine sites show any relevant evidence on any of the fifteen issues covered in the mine-site assessment.
