  • First Quantum
  • RMI average
  • Collective Best Score

Absolute results are low overall and First Quantum’s results are largely dependent on the formal commitments it has made, including to prevent bribery and corruption, respect human rights, and ensure safe and healthy working conditions. The company’s results also stem in part from its disclosures on, for example the payments it makes to subnational and national governments and the number and location of its tailings storage facilities.

In Community Wellbeing, First Quantum shows relatively stronger results in improving its performance on ensuring that livelihoods are improved or restored following any involuntary resettlement.

First Quantum’s overall results in the company-wide assessment are below the average across all six thematic areas. The company’s results are limited by a lack of evidence of systematic action on issues such as addressing the health and safety needs of women workers and tracking the quality of its relationships with affected communities.

First Quantum ranks 26th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, with an average score of only 6% in the mine-site assessment. The overall results of the seven First Quantum mine sites included in the mine-site assessment are strikingly weak. While all of the sites show at least some relevant evidence on post-closure as well as tailings, six of the sites show no relevant evidence on nine of the fifteen issues covered in the assessment: local employment, air quality, water quality, water quantity, safety of workers, women workers, worker training, living wage, and worker grievances.
