Summary of Results
- Newmont
- RMI average
- Collective Best Score
While absolute results remain low overall, Newmont shows one of the two stronger results in Community Wellbeing and Environmental Responsibility, one of the four stronger results in Economic Development and Business Conduct, and above average in the remaining thematic areas (Lifecycle Management and Working Conditions).
In Community Wellbeing, Newmont is one of only four assessed companies to have made a formal commitment to respect the rights of human rights defenders, and it shows one of the better results on having systems to assess and address the potential impacts of involuntary displacement.
In Environmental Responsibility, Newmont shows relatively stronger results on three issues: systems to ensure its operations take an integrated approach to assessing their environmental impacts, systems to ensure tailings management and safety, and systems to ensure its operations plan and implement water stewardship strategies.
In Economic Development, Newmont shows one of the stronger results on developing procurement opportunities for national-level suppliers in producing countries.
Newmont’s relatively strong results in Business Conduct reflect the company’s continuous improvement efforts since the RMI Report 2020, including the release of its Extractive Sector Transparency Measures Act Annual Report publicly disclosing all payments to governments from its mining operations disaggregated by project, subnational government, and type of payments.
Newmont is associated with a leading practice on improving diversity through recruitment and employment practices that aim to counter unconscious biases.
Newmont’s overall results are limited by a lack of evidence on a number of issues, including for example planning for post-closure just transition for workers, assessing and addressing its impacts on land use and land access for affected communities, and addressing the health and safety needs of women workers. The company also provides no evidence of systems in place to identify, assess, and address how climate change can exacerbate the impacts of their operations on affected communities and workers.
Newmont ranks 7th among the 40 companies on its mine-site-level results, though with an average score of only 14%. None of the seven Newmont mine sites included in the mine-site assessment show any evidence relating to five of the fifteen issues examined. This includes air quality, safety of communities, safety of workers, women workers, and living wage.
